Matthew 17:6
βWhen the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces, and were very afraid.β
What does Matthew 17:6 mean?
The disciples have just witnessed something extraordinary, Jesus being transfigured in brilliant light alongside Moses and Elijah, and then hearing God's voice affirm Jesus as his beloved Son. Their instinctive response is to collapse in terror, which tells us something honest about encountering the holy, the powerful, and the true. Sometimes when we come face to face with something much bigger than ourselves, fear is the natural first response, even (or especially) when that encounter is ultimately good news. What matters is what happens next: Jesus tells them not to be afraid and helps them back to their feet, showing that divine power and love go together.
