Matthew 17:5
“While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. Behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.””
What does Matthew 17:5 mean?
This moment captures the Transfiguration, when Jesus' closest disciples witnessed him transformed in brilliant light alongside Moses and Elijah. A cloud, thick with God's presence, descended around them, and they heard God the Father's own voice affirming Jesus with deep love and approval. The command to "listen to him" is God's way of telling the disciples (and us) that Jesus carries divine authority and wisdom worth following completely. For anyone feeling uncertain about who Jesus really is or whether trusting him makes sense, this verse reminds us that God himself vouches for Jesus as worthy of our full attention and devotion.
