What does Matthew 17:4 mean?
Peter has just witnessed something extraordinary: Jesus standing with Moses and Elijah, glowing with divine light. His instinct is to hold onto the moment, to build permanent structures and stay in this mountaintop experience. It's a deeply human response when we encounter something sacred or beautiful—we want to preserve it, to make it last forever. But Peter's offer reveals a misunderstanding about what Jesus has come to do. This isn't a moment to camp out and hide from the world; it's a moment of confirmation before Jesus walks toward his suffering and death. The tents would honor these figures equally, missing the point that Jesus is the fulfillment of what Moses and Elijah represented. Many of us know this feeling in our own faith: we encounter God's presence in a worship service, a prayer time, or a spiritual retreat, and we wish we could stay there. Yet God typically calls us back down the mountain, into our ordinary lives, to live out what we've learned. The real work of faith happens not in the moments of bright clarity, but in the everyday choices that follow.
