“Don’t you yet perceive, neither remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?”
What does Matthew 16:9 mean?
Jesus is reminding his disciples of something they'd just witnessed: the miraculous feeding of five thousand people with just five loaves of bread. He's asking them, "How could you forget this so quickly?" His point isn't really about bread or basketfuls of leftovers, though, it's about whether they truly trust him. Right after seeing Jesus multiply food to feed an enormous crowd, the disciples are anxious about having no bread for themselves, which means they haven't yet grasped what they've learned about his power and care. When Jesus asks if they "perceive" and "remember," he's inviting them to connect the dots: if he could provide abundantly then, why would they doubt his provision now? For anyone walking through worry or scarcity, this is a tender invitation to recall moments when God has come through before, and to let those memories reshape how we face today's uncertainty.
