And in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrine rules made by men.’”

What does Matthew 15:9 mean?

Jesus is calling out religious leaders who've buried God's actual commands under layers of human tradition. They teach their own rules as if God gave them, turning worship into a performance of following people instead of genuinely following God. When worship becomes about keeping up appearances or checking boxes that someone else invented, it misses the whole point. Jesus wants our hearts turned toward God and his real values, not toward impressing others or obeying arbitrary restrictions. If the things we're told to believe or do don't actually come from Scripture, they can become empty habits that push us away from authentic faith rather than closer to it.
