What does Matthew 15:8 mean?

Jesus is pointing out a painful gap between what people say and what they actually feel. When our words of praise or promises don't match what's really going on inside us, we're going through the motions without genuine connection. He's not condemning people for struggling or being imperfect, but rather calling out the way we sometimes use religious practices as a cover-up instead of letting them flow from real devotion. It's an invitation to ask ourselves whether we're showing up authentically, bringing our whole selves to God rather than just performing the right words.
