What does Matthew 15:4 mean?
Jesus is reinforcing one of the Ten Commandments here, reminding his listeners that honoring parents isn't optional or negotiable. The second part sounds harsh to modern ears, but in ancient Israel it reflected how seriously the community took the parent-child bond as foundational to society itself. When Jesus quotes this, he's essentially saying that caring for your parents matters deeply to God, not because parents are perfect, but because the relationship itself is sacred. For many of us, this lands differently depending on our own family stories, and that's okay, but the core truth remains: we're called to treat our parents with dignity and respect, even when the relationship is complicated.
