Matthew 15:3
“He answered them, “Why do you also disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?”
What does Matthew 15:3 mean?
Jesus is challenging the religious leaders who have been criticizing his disciples for eating without washing their hands first. The leaders had built up elaborate rules and customs around the original laws, and those traditions had actually become more important to them than what God's commands were really about. His question cuts to the heart of the problem: when we get so focused on the way we've always done things, we can end up breaking the actual spirit of what God asked of us. This speaks to anyone who has found themselves trapped by rules that no longer make sense, or caught between what an institution demands and what genuine faith requires. Jesus is inviting us to examine our priorities and ask whether we're honoring God or just honoring habit.
