What does Matthew 15:2 mean?

The Pharisees are confronting Jesus about his disciples eating without performing the ritual hand-washing that Jewish tradition required before meals. This wasn't about hygiene (though that mattered too), but about purity laws that had developed over centuries as ways to honor God and stay spiritually prepared. What makes this moment significant is that Jesus is about to challenge whether external practices like this actually matter most to God, turning the question back to what's really happening in a person's heart. For those of us trying to follow Jesus, it's worth asking whether we sometimes focus on doing the "right things" in the "right ways" while missing what God actually cares about in our lives.
