Matthew 15:34
“Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.””
What does Matthew 15:34 mean?
Jesus has just been teaching and healing a large crowd of four thousand people who have been following him for days without food. He's moved by their need and wants to feed them, so he asks his disciples what resources they have on hand. Their honest answer, "Seven loaves and a few small fish," shows they're aware of how little they have compared to the enormous hunger around them. This simple exchange reminds us that Jesus doesn't ask us to have everything figured out or to bring abundant resources before we act. He invites us to offer what we actually have, even when it seems inadequate. In this case, those seven loaves and few fish will become enough to feed thousands, with leftovers. When we're facing a need or wondering how we could possibly help someone, this moment invites us to stop worrying about what's missing and instead notice what's already in our hands.
