What does Matthew 15:20 mean?
Jesus is finishing a teaching about what actually makes a person spiritually unclean. His disciples had been criticized by religious leaders for eating without the ritual hand-washing that tradition required, so Jesus clarifies what truly matters: the attitudes and choices that come from inside a person (anger, greed, dishonesty, unkindness) are what damage the human spirit, not external practices like unwashed hands. This was a radical thing to say in his culture, where purity rules were deeply important. Jesus wasn't dismissing cleanliness or respect for tradition entirely, but he was redirecting attention to what counts most: the condition of your heart.
