Then the disciples came, and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying?”

What does Matthew 15:12 mean?

The disciples are worried about Jesus, alert to the fact that his words have upset the religious leaders. They're essentially asking, "Aren't you concerned? Don't you realize what you've said might cause trouble?" It's the kind of anxious question people ask when they care about someone and fear the consequences of his actions. What's interesting is that the disciples seem surprised or troubled that Jesus would speak in a way that offends powerful people, suggesting they might still be learning what it means to follow someone who speaks truth regardless of who it upsets.
