Matthew 15:11
“That which enters into the mouth doesn’t defile the man; but that which proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.””
What does Matthew 15:11 mean?
Jesus is pushing back against a common religious anxiety of his time: the fear that eating certain foods made you spiritually unclean. What actually matters, he's saying, is not what goes into your body but what comes out of it, meaning your words and actions. When you speak harshly, lie, gossip, or spread cruelty, that's what corrupts you from the inside out, not a meal shared with someone the rules said you shouldn't eat with. This is deeply freeing for anyone who's felt judged for the "wrong" things, because it redirects us toward what genuinely shapes who we are: the intentions, words, and choices that flow from our hearts.
