What does Matthew 13:14 mean?
Jesus is explaining why he teaches in parables, and this verse points to a hard truth: sometimes people can encounter truth directly and still miss it entirely. The quote comes from Isaiah 6, where the prophet describes a kind of spiritual numbness that overtakes people who have repeatedly hardened their hearts against God's message. What makes this so sobering is that it's not about lacking intelligence or opportunity. The people Jesus speaks to have eyes, ears, and access to his words, yet something blocks genuine understanding. It's less about God refusing to let them see and more about people who have become resistant, distracted, or closed off by their own choices and prejudices. There's comfort here too, though, because Jesus is being honest about a real spiritual condition rather than pretending everyone will automatically get it.
