“for this people’s heart has grown callous, their ears are dull of hearing, they have closed their eyes; or else perhaps they might perceive with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and would turn again; and I would heal them.’”
What does Matthew 13:15 mean?
Jesus is describing what happens when people repeatedly reject God's truth, over long periods. Their hearts gradually become harder, their ability to truly listen fades, and they actively turn away from seeing what God is showing them. It's not that God makes this happen, but that choosing to ignore Him again and again creates a kind of spiritual numbness, like a conscience worn down by being ignored. Yet even in this sad diagnosis, there's an opening: the word "perhaps" reminds us that transformation is still possible. If people turn back around, if they become willing to genuinely see, hear, and understand, God stands ready to heal them. The verse captures both the real consequences of turning away from God and the enduring possibility of turning back toward Him.
