Matthew 12:25
“Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.”
What does Matthew 12:25 mean?
Jesus is responding to people who accused him of casting out demons by the power of Satan himself. He points out the logical flaw in their accusation: if Satan were actually working through Jesus to drive out demons, then Satan would be working against his own interests, which makes no sense. A kingdom can't survive when it's fighting itself from the inside. This principle goes beyond the immediate argument, though. Jesus is saying something true about how any group, community, or even a person functions: internal conflict and contradiction eventually lead to collapse. When our values clash with our actions, when we're divided in our loyalties, when a family or organization is fundamentally at war with itself, something has to give. Unity around a common purpose is what holds things together. If you're struggling with feeling divided within yourself or caught between competing loyalties, this verse reminds us that wholeness matters. It also speaks to why communities need genuine agreement on what they're about to actually survive and thrive.
