What does Matthew 10:38 mean?
When Jesus speaks about taking up a cross, he's not asking for physical suffering as a badge of honor. He's calling people to be willing to surrender their own plans and comfort, the way someone carrying a cross to execution would have no choice but to let go of everything else. Following Jesus means accepting that your life might look different from what you'd planned, and that's okay, because you're aligned with something greater than your own comfort or reputation. The hard truth here is that half-hearted faith won't cut it. Jesus isn't being cruel, just honest: if you're following him only when it's convenient or only for what you can get, you're missing the point entirely. Real discipleship requires actually showing up, even when it costs you something. But for those willing to make that commitment, there's a belonging and purpose that shallow faith can never offer.
