“He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me isn’t worthy of me.”
What does Matthew 10:37 mean?
Jesus is calling his followers to a radical reorientation of their deepest loyalties. He's not saying family relationships don't matter, but rather that commitment to him and his kingdom must come first, even when those two things pull in different directions. This would have been stunning to hear in a culture where family obligation was sacred and paramount. The hard truth here is that sometimes following Jesus means making choices that disappoint or distance us from people we love most. It might mean refusing a family business deal that conflicts with your values, choosing a different life path than your parents expected, or standing firm in faith when your household doesn't share it. Jesus is honest that discipleship sometimes costs us relationally, and he's asking whether we're willing to pay that price. The comfort in this is that he's not asking us to pretend family doesn't matter, but to trust that putting him first ultimately leads to a deeper, more authentic life than any other priority could offer.
