What does Matthew 10:28 mean?
Jesus is inviting his followers into a radically different way of measuring what matters. When we're terrified of what people can do to us physically, we shrink our lives and compromise our integrity, but our deepest self, our soul, remains untouched by their power. What he's really asking is: where does your ultimate allegiance lie? The "fear" Jesus points toward isn't cowering dread but reverent awareness of God's absolute reality and authority. He's saying that accountability to God is the only fear that deserves your full attention, because God alone sees and knows everything about us. Gehenna was the image his listeners knew, a valley outside Jerusalem symbolizing complete separation and loss. For us today, it simply means: take seriously the one whose opinion actually determines everything, not the temporary threats of people around you. This hits hardest for those facing real persecution, but it also speaks to anyone pressured to betray their conscience to stay safe or liked. Jesus isn't dismissing suffering. He's reorienting our loyalties so we can find the courage to be faithful even when it costs us.
