What does Matthew 10:16 mean?
Jesus is preparing his disciples for a difficult mission, and he's being honest about it. They'll face hostility and danger as they go out to spread his message, much like vulnerable sheep surrounded by predators. But he's not sending them unprepared or telling them to be naive. Instead, Jesus calls them to a careful balance: be shrewd and thoughtful like a serpent (knowing when to be cautious, how to navigate tricky situations) while staying innocent and gentle like a dove (keeping pure motives and refusing to harm others). It's wisdom without deception, and gentleness without being a pushover. This applies beautifully to anyone trying to do good in a world that may not always welcome it.
