Matthew 10:17
βBut beware of men: for they will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you.β
What does Matthew 10:17 mean?
Jesus is preparing his followers for real hardship. He's telling them that sharing his message won't always be welcomed, and some people will actively oppose them, dragging them before religious authorities and punishing them. This wasn't a distant threat, either, it happened to the early Christians within their own lifetimes. What makes this verse powerful isn't the warning itself, but what comes next in Matthew's account: Jesus tells them not to be afraid, because God is with them. He's not sugar-coating the difficulty ahead, but he's also not leaving them without hope. If you're facing resistance for your faith or values right now, this reminds you that you're not alone in that struggle, and you weren't promised an easy path, but you were promised you wouldn't walk it by yourself.
