What does Mark 9:48 mean?
Jesus is describing the consequences of turning away from God, using the image of a worm that never dies and a fire that never goes out. In the ancient world, this painted a picture of the worst possible fate: a body left to decay endlessly in a dump outside Jerusalem (Gehenna), with nothing to stop the process of deterioration and destruction. He's not being graphic for shock value, but rather taking the most permanent, irreversible image his listeners knew and saying that rejecting God leads to genuine, lasting separation from life itself.
