Mark 9:47
“If your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out. It is better for you to enter into God’s Kingdom with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the Gehenna of fire,”
What does Mark 9:47 mean?
Jesus is speaking in dramatic, almost shocking language here to emphasize how serious he considers our spiritual choices. He's not literally telling people to blind themselves, but rather using extreme imagery to say that we should be willing to make radical sacrifices to protect our relationship with God. If something we see or focus on regularly—whether it's habits we've developed, people who lead us astray, or ways we spend our time—is pulling us away from following Jesus, we need to be willing to cut it out of our lives, even if it hurts. The point is that spiritual health matters infinitely more than comfort or convenience, and the consequences of drifting from God are far more serious than any earthly loss we might face.
