“For everyone will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.”
What does Mark 9:49 mean?
Jesus is speaking here about the refining and transforming nature of trials in the spiritual life. In ancient times, salt was used both as a preservative and as a purifying agent in sacrifices offered to God, so this image would have resonated deeply with his Jewish listeners. What he's saying is that everyone who follows him will go through difficult experiences, hardships that feel like fire, and these painful seasons serve a purpose, much like salt seasons and preserves. The point isn't that suffering is good in itself, but that it works in us like salt does in sacrifice, creating something that matters and endures.
