What does Mark 9:29 mean?
Jesus is responding to his disciples' frustration after they couldn't heal a boy with a severe spiritual affliction. The disciples had tried and failed, so they ask Jesus why, and he tells them that some situations are so spiritually resistant that they require more than routine effort or casual faith. Prayer and fasting are practices that strip away distractions and deepen dependence on God, clearing the inner clutter that sometimes blocks our access to his power. This doesn't mean God is distant or reluctant to help. Rather, Jesus is pointing to something real about ourselves: when we face our hardest struggles, surface-level approaches often don't work. We need to get serious, get quiet, and get honest about how much we actually need God's help. It's an invitation to move beyond going through the motions.
