What does Mark 9:28 mean?

The disciples are asking Jesus why they failed to help a boy with a severe seizure disorder, even though Jesus had given them power to cast out demons. Their frustration is real and understandable, they'd tried and couldn't do what they believed they were called to do. In the next verse, Jesus tells them this particular kind of deliverance requires prayer and fasting, suggesting that some spiritual breakthroughs demand deeper faith and preparation than others. This moment reminds us that even those closest to Jesus sometimes struggled with doubt and limitation, and that failure can be a door to learning more about trust.
