“But Jesus took him by the hand, and raised him up; and he arose.”
What does Mark 9:27 mean?
In this moment, Jesus responds to a desperate father whose son has been seized by a destructive spirit. The boy has fallen to the ground, apparently lifeless or unresponsive, and everyone around is watching to see what will happen. Jesus doesn't stand back or speak from a distance. He reaches down, takes the boy's hand, and pulls him up, and the child stands to his feet, restored. What's striking here is the physical tenderness of it. Jesus could have healed with a word (as he does elsewhere), but instead he makes contact, he touches, he lifts. For someone in deep fear or pain or loss, there's something profoundly comforting about that kind of direct, personal help. It shows us a Jesus who meets us not just with power, but with presence and care, and who isn't afraid to get close to what's broken in our lives.
