Mark 9:18

and wherever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth, and wastes away. I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they weren’t able.”

What does Mark 9:18 mean?

A father is describing his son's devastating condition to Jesus, painting a picture of how completely this illness (which Jesus will soon reveal is spiritual oppression) controls the boy's body and life. The detail matters here because the man is expressing both his desperation and his frustration that the disciples, who normally cast out demons, couldn't help him. He's at the end of his rope, having tried everything available to him, and now he's bringing his son directly to Jesus as a last resort. This raw honesty about failure, exhaustion, and hope is exactly the kind of vulnerability Jesus welcomes.
