“He said to them, “Elijah indeed comes first, and restores all things. How is it written about the Son of Man, that he should suffer many things and be despised?”
What does Mark 9:12 mean?
Jesus is responding to his disciples' confusion about Old Testament prophecies. They expected Elijah to come and set everything right before the Messiah arrived, and Jesus affirms that expectation is correct, but he's pointing out that the scriptures also describe the Messiah's own painful path. He's asking them (really inviting them to discover) why they haven't noticed that the same scriptures promise both restoration and suffering, both victory and rejection. This question cuts to the heart of what Jesus is about to face in Jerusalem. The disciples wanted a triumphant, powerful Messiah, but Jesus is gently teaching them that faithfulness sometimes means enduring hardship rather than avoiding it. His question isn't meant to condemn their confusion, but to open their eyes to a fuller, more complex picture of what God's plan actually looks like.
