What does Mark 9:11 mean?
The disciples here are referencing a widespread Jewish expectation that Elijah would return before the Messiah arrived, based on the prophecy in Malachi. They're puzzled because Jesus has just been transfigured in front of them (an incredibly dramatic, divine moment), yet there's been no sign of Elijah showing up first as the tradition predicted.
