“But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they have also done to him whatever they wanted to, even as it is written about him.””
What does Mark 9:13 mean?
Jesus is telling his disciples that John the Baptist is the promised forerunner, the one who was supposed to come before the Messiah. Just as the prophet Elijah was expected to return before God's great day of judgment, John played that role—preparing people's hearts and pointing them toward Jesus. But notice the painful part: just as the ancient prophets faced rejection and suffering, John too was mistreated and killed by those who refused to listen to him. Jesus is gently pointing out that the same rejection he's now experiencing was written about long ago in Scripture. If people wouldn't listen to the forerunner, why would they listen to the Messiah himself? There's both a comfort and a hard truth here: sometimes doing God's work means facing opposition, and that's part of the ancient pattern God's people have always known.
