because it doesn’t go into his heart, but into his stomach, then into the latrine, thus purifying all foods ?”

What does Mark 7:19 mean?

Jesus is answering a concern his disciples had raised about eating without ritual handwashing. He's pointing out that food is physically processed and eliminated by the body, not absorbed into our character or spiritual state. What actually defiles us spiritually, he's saying, comes from within, our own choices and attitudes, not from external things like which foods we eat or how carefully we've washed before a meal. This was radical in its context, where Jewish purity laws were deeply woven into daily life and identity, but Jesus is redirecting attention to the condition of our hearts rather than external observance.
