What does Mark 7:18 mean?
Jesus is gently pushing back against the religious leaders' obsession with external purity rules. They'd been criticizing his disciples for eating without washing their hands first, which violated traditions about ritual cleanliness. He's asking them to think deeper: physical things that enter our bodies (food, dirt, whatever) don't actually make us spiritually unclean or separate us from God. What matters far more is what comes from inside us, from our hearts and minds. This was radical because it shifted the focus from outward behavior and rules to inner character and intention. For anyone carrying guilt or shame about mistakes, this verse offers real comfort: God isn't keeping score based on external failures or contamination, but on the orientation of our hearts toward him.
