“No one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and the wine pours out, and the skins will be destroyed; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins.””
What does Mark 2:22 mean?
Jesus is teaching that you can't just patch old ways with something completely new, because the strain will break everything. In his time, wineskins were made from animal leather, and they'd become brittle and rigid after use, so fresh wine's fermentation would burst them. He's saying that the kingdom of God he's bringing isn't just a minor update to Jewish religious practice, but something transformative that needs space to work. This matters because it gives us permission to let go of approaches that no longer serve us, rather than trying to squeeze new life into exhausted structures. Whether that's old habits, inherited expectations, or ways of thinking that have grown stiff, sometimes the kindest thing is to make room for fresh beginnings instead of patching what's worn out.
