What does Mark 12:22 mean?
This verse concludes a tricky question the Sadducees posed to Jesus about resurrection. They described a woman who was widowed seven times, each brother marrying her in turn according to Jewish law (designed to protect widows), yet she never had children with any of them. By the time she died, all seven brothers were also gone. The Sadducees were setting up a puzzle: in the resurrection, whose wife would she be? Their real goal was to mock the idea of resurrection itself. But notice the matter-of-fact way Mark records her death, listing her last among all those men. Even in their theological argument, a real woman's loneliness and loss quietly echo through the story. Jesus doesn't play their game; instead, he redirects the conversation entirely, suggesting their question misunderstands heaven altogether.
