What does Mark 12:21 mean?
This verse is part of a tricky question the Sadducees pose to Jesus about resurrection. They describe a woman who marries seven brothers in succession, each dying without leaving her children, and they're trying to trap Jesus into saying something illogical about heaven. The detail matters because in Jewish law of that time, if a man died childless, his brother was expected to marry the widow to carry on the family line. So these brothers are doing their duty, but one after another, none of them survive to have children with her. It's a deliberately absurd scenario designed to make the idea of resurrection sound ridiculous.
