What does Mark 12:14 mean?
The religious leaders here are trying to trap Jesus with flattery, asking whether Jews should pay taxes to the Roman occupiers. Their question seems innocent on the surface, but it's actually a test: if Jesus says yes to taxes, he looks like he's supporting Roman oppression; if he says no, he could be accused of rebellion against Caesar. Notice how they begin by praising him as honest and impartial, which makes their trap all the more cunning, since they're not being honest themselves.
