Mark 12:15

Shall we give, or shall we not give?” But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius, that I may see it.”

What does Mark 12:15 mean?

The religious leaders were trying to trap Jesus with a question about taxes, hoping to make him look either disloyal to Rome or unfaithful to God. Jesus saw right through their scheme, recognizing that they weren't genuinely seeking wisdom but trying to catch him in a contradiction. Rather than falling into their trap, he asks them to show him a coin and turns the whole conversation around to make a deeper point about what we truly belong to. His calm, perceptive response reminds us that sometimes the wisest thing we can do when facing someone's hostility is to pause, see what's really going on beneath the surface, and respond with clarity instead of defensiveness.
