What does Mark 12:13 mean?
People who opposed Jesus were getting desperate, so they decided to set a verbal trap for him. The Pharisees were religious leaders focused on strict law-keeping, while the Herodians supported King Herod's rule, so they wouldn't normally work together, but they united against Jesus. They hoped to ask him a question clever enough that whatever he answered would get him into trouble with either the religious authorities or the Roman government. It's a reminder that hostility often makes unlikely allies, and that people sometimes care more about winning an argument or defeating someone than about seeking truth together.
