What does Mark 10:45 mean?
Jesus is describing his entire mission in one sentence: he came not to receive honor or comfort, but to give himself away. The word "ransom" points to something precious being paid to free people from captivity, suggesting that Jesus understood his death as a costly act of liberation for us. What makes this radical is that it comes right after his disciples were arguing about who would be greatest in his kingdom. Jesus is essentially saying, "That's not how this works." Real greatness, real leadership, looks like pouring yourself out for others. He didn't come to sit on a throne and be waited on; he came to wash feet, heal the sick, and ultimately to die. His whole life was an invitation to a completely different way of measuring worth and success.
