“They came to Jericho. As he went out from Jericho, with his disciples and a great multitude, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road.”
What does Mark 10:46 mean?
Bartimaeus sits by the roadside in Jericho, blind and dependent on the charity of passersby for survival. Jesus and a crowd are passing through town, and this moment will change everything for him, though he doesn't yet know it. The Gospel writer carefully names him, "the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus," which shows us that this man mattered, that his story was worth preserving and sharing. Sometimes the people we might overlook, the ones sitting on the margins with little to offer, are exactly the ones Jesus stops for.
