What does Mark 10:42 mean?

Jesus is pointing out something his followers already understand: worldly power tends to work through domination. The rulers they saw every day used their positions to control others, and the wealthy leveraged their status to get what they wanted. He's not condemning ambition itself, but rather describing how the world's system operates so he can contrast it with something radically different. In the next verses, he'll tell his disciples that greatness in God's kingdom works the opposite way, through service rather than dominance. It's Jesus holding up a mirror to show us what we're tempted to imitate when we chase status and control.
