Luke 9:24
“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake, the same will save it.”
What does Luke 9:24 mean?
Jesus is saying that clinging too tightly to our own comfort, safety, and desires actually leaves us empty, while letting go of that grip paradoxically leads to real life and peace. When we stop making self-protection our highest priority and instead orient ourselves around what Jesus calls us to, we discover something deeper than mere survival—we find purpose, meaning, and genuine wholeness. It's the opposite of what our instinct tells us: that holding on harder will make us safer. The invitation here is to trust that a life surrendered to following Jesus, even when it costs us, is infinitely richer than a life spent defending ourselves.
