Luke 9:23
“He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”
What does Luke 9:23 mean?
Jesus is describing what it truly means to be his follower, and he's being honest about the cost. "Denying yourself" doesn't mean hating yourself or becoming a doormat; it means letting go of the constant drive to protect your own interests, control your circumstances, or build a life on your terms alone. Taking up your cross means accepting whatever hardship or sacrifice comes with following him, rather than demanding comfort or an easy path. What makes this challenging and beautiful at once is that Jesus isn't asking for something he didn't do himself. He was inviting people then (and us now) into a way of living centered on trust in God rather than self-protection, on purpose rather than convenience. If you're worn down by trying to manage everything, or exhausted by always insisting on your own way, there's an odd freedom hidden in these words. Following Jesus means you don't have to carry that burden alone anymore.
