Luke 9:12
“The day began to wear away; and the twelve came, and said to him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and farms, and lodge, and get food, for we are here in a deserted place.””
What does Luke 9:12 mean?
The disciples are getting practical and a little worried. It's getting late, they're out in the middle of nowhere with thousands of hungry people, and nobody has made dinner plans. Their suggestion makes perfect sense: dismiss the crowd so folks can find shelter and food in the nearby towns. What makes this moment powerful is what happens next in the story. Jesus doesn't send people away. Instead, he asks his disciples to feed the multitude themselves, which leads to the miraculous feeding of the five thousand. The disciples' reasonable concern becomes the setup for encountering Jesus' generous, abundant care in a way they never expected. Sometimes when we hit a limit and voice it honestly, we're standing right at the edge of something God wants to do.
