Luke 9:13
“But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we should go and buy food for all these people.””
What does Luke 9:13 mean?
Jesus has just asked his disciples to feed a crowd of thousands, and their response is honest: they're looking at their meager supplies and the math simply doesn't work. Five loaves and two fish couldn't possibly feed everyone gathered there. Their confusion is understandable, even practical, because they're calculating based on what's visible and countable. This moment captures something true about faith: we often face situations that seem impossible by our own resources, and our first instinct is to list our limitations. The disciples aren't wrong about what they have, but Jesus is about to show them that their willingness to offer what little they possess matters far more than the size of the problem. Sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is bring our meager offerings to Jesus and let him do the multiplying.
