Luke 8:5

What does Luke 8:5 mean?
Jesus opens this parable by painting a familiar scene: a farmer scattering seed across his field, a common sight in first-century agriculture. Some seed falls on the hard-packed path where people walk, where it has no chance to take root. Those seeds get stepped on and eaten by birds, never even beginning to grow. The parable uses this failed crop as a picture of how people receive God's message. Just as some seed never germinates because the soil won't allow it, some people hear God's word but it makes no real impression on them. Their hearts are like that trampled path: too hardened or distracted to let the message actually sink in and change anything. It's a hopeful parable overall, but it starts by being honest about the reality that not everyone is ready to receive what God offers.
