What does Luke 7:29 mean?
When Jesus speaks, even the people society had written off—the tax collectors—recognize something true and good in his words. They respond by affirming that God is just, and they've already shown their commitment by submitting to John's baptism. Luke is telling us that genuine spiritual insight isn't limited to the respectable or the religiously educated; it comes to anyone willing to listen and respond honestly to God's call. The tax collectors here become an example of those who, despite their reputation, are actually getting closer to God than the proud people around them.
