What does Luke 5:30 mean?
The religious leaders of Jesus's time were scandalized because his followers were sharing meals with tax collectors and others considered morally corrupt. In Jewish culture, eating together was intimate and implied acceptance, so this looked like Jesus was endorsing sinful behavior. What they couldn't see was that Jesus came precisely for people living on the margins, and sharing a meal was his way of saying they mattered and could be transformed by knowing him.
