What does Luke 5:31 mean?

Jesus is responding to criticism from religious leaders who were scandalized that he ate with tax collectors and sinners. He's pointing out that his mission is to help people who recognize they need help, just as a doctor goes where sick people are. The deeper truth here is that spiritual healing (which is what Jesus offers) begins when we honestly acknowledge our brokenness or distance from God—we can't receive help if we're convinced we don't need it. This speaks tenderly to anyone who feels ashamed of their struggles, reminding us that admitting we're not okay is actually the doorway to transformation.
